Avocado's are a tropical/subtropical medium to large tree that can grow in a container or directly into the ground. They need a minimum of 6 hours of full sun and can grow in a variety of soils. Every avocado variety will have different flavor profiles, shapes and growing habits but they all are delicious fruit to eat. Here in South Florida, our climate affords us the luck to grow some of the tastiest and hardiest varieties of avocado trees just for you.
'Oro negro' is a variety of avocado that has been highly sought after by avid avocado connoisseurs for many years now. This black beauty is said to have originated in Homestead, FL. as a sport of a green variety, possibly a cross from a 'Monroe' (from Guatemala) and a Mexican variety. Regardless of it's potential true origins, it's a fantastic avocado variety we know you are going to love. The fruit is a rich creamy texture with buttery nutty flavor profiles and are about 1-2 lbs. They have a fairly large seed but don't let that stop you, these are delicious! The trees are moderate to fast growers though if you want to keep your tree small please know you will need to stay on top of a pruning schedule since the tree's will grow quite large. They grow excellent and will fruit in containers if that's more your style. Flowers are B-type. Late season production- fruit ripens in winter; November through January, cold hardy to about central Florida.
